Santorum has the right stuff to juice up the presidential horse race

Remember Righteous Rick Santorum?

Hard to believe the guy once was the No. 3 Republican in the Senate.

And you may be surprised to know that he was one of Pennsylvania’s own until his abrasive sandpaper personality rubbed voters the wrong way and we replaced him with the dandy dynamic Bob Casey.

I, for one, never figured Santorum to be on the cusp of disintegration even though, like a NASCAR driver, he never hangs a left.

The guy is a firebrand on the campaign trail, more blunt than a crowbar to the forehead. And while liberal critics will never run out of arrows in their quivers, Santorum’s opposition to abortion and gay marriage makes him the darling of social conservatives.

So no surprise that Santorum jumped into the presidential derby today, vowing to protect the American freedoms he says that President Obama has under siege.

While Santorum seems to be a long shot in the polls, fundraising and personal wealth, he should strike a chord in early nominating states like Iowa and South Carolina.

And he could be a lightning rod in the otherwise melancholy fog of the Tea Party.

Rock on, Rick!
