Oh, brother! Big Brother is watching us more closely than a myopic voyeur

Big Brother is alive and well and living in Washington, D.C. And he’s keeping an eye out for us.

Big Brother is nosier than Pinocchio! Or the White House when they’re lying about Benghazi.

If only George Orwell were alive to see this.

Today came the breaking news that the Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records in April and May of 2012 of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative’s top executive called a “massive and unprecedented intrusion” into how news organizations gather the news.

This comes on the heels of the bombshell that the IRS was inappropriately targeting Tea Party groups for scrutiny.

I guess Big Government with a BIG Nose can lead to Big Trouble.

Evidently sizes does matter.

Evidently to you, Zeke, it’s just some faceless ‘government’ or a Justice Department run by a guy whose name you never knew or can’t remember that’s responsible for this. Did you even know that the law requires this type of surveilance to have the personal approval of the Attorney General? Apparently not. Also, the last time I checked, we elected someone to oversee and to run said government. Maybe you forgot his name too?

You frustrate the bejeebers out of me sometimes, my friend. Heaven forbid you should land a heavy blow onto a person who has a D behind their name, even when clearly their actions richly deserve all the scorn your pen can muster.

  2. It’s obvious that the wizard behind the Big Brother curtain is none other than Barack Obama, D.

And I use the term wizard sarcastically.

By the way, Murray, you may be surprised that I actually voted for Romney basically because of Obamacare and lack of job creation.

I am more of a moderate than you imagine. I voted for Reagan and Nixon, too.

    Zeke

I trust what you say about your voting record, Zeke. Also, you’ve got total credibility with me on Obamacare, not having wasted many opportunities to label it the disaster that it is. Nevertheless, in regards to my original comments here, I wouldn’t change a word. Especially given the fact that the AG is required by law to approve the type of surveilance that was carried out against the AP. I see it as a glaring omission not to single him out as being accountable, given that he is the only person of the roughly 7 billion people on planet Earth who has the authority to set that type of operation into motion. And of course all of these things are happening under Obama’s watch, so here as well is a place where the man who’s supposedly running the show needed to be called out by name.

I didn’t go to journalism school, but even I know that a well written story must answer or attempt to answer the basic questions who, what, where, when and why. In this case, the answer to ‘who’ was not a nameless ‘big brother’ or a faceless ‘big government’, but Barack Obama and Eric Holder. For that reason, I would think that these omissions would garner a mark in J school for this piece of no better than a B.
